My Home Brew Experiment With Water Kefir For A Better Gut & Great Poops
As you probably know, I’m big on packing many of my daily beverages with health benefits.
My newest favorite experiment in home fermentation is water kefir, and I recently started making it in the ol’ Greenfield kitchen, for pennies on the dollar compared to the five to ten bucks you gotta spend on water kefir at the average health food store.
Water kefir is a lightly carbonated beverage that contains probiotics, enzymes, and minerals. This stuff is SO good for your gut (without feeding yeast and Candida like kombucha and beer can). A lot of people swear it gives you great poops, too, including my father and brother, who inspired me to start this home kefir project.
Water kefir is actually made from these little things called water kefir grains, which consist of bacteria and yeast living in a symbiotic relationship, and not actual “grains” like oats or wheat or something like that. I got my grains from a company called Cultures for Health because theirs are organic, certified gluten-free, and also GMO- and dairy-free, but many folks who make water kefir have tons of leftover grains and just share them with friends, much like a sourdough starter or kombucha scoby.
Turns out, it’s not hard at all to make water kefir. All I had to do for my first ferment was add the kefir grains to a big glass jar of water with a little baking soda, a touch of molasses and sugar, and a small squeeze of lime (lemon works too). You let it sit for like a week, then strain the kefir grains out to start a new batch. If cared for properly, water kefir grains can be reused indefinitely. Ratios are important, and it’s pretty simple to Google home water kefir making instructions.
Cultures for Health has a Water Kefir Starter Kit for less than $40 that contains everything you need to started, and it comes with good instructions, too. There are also a ton of helpful how-to videos and tutorials on their website, so with pretty low cost and effort, you get also get water kefir into your healthy beverage rotation. Try it out, I dare ya! It’s super tasty and your gut will feel great.
